A Teenager Who Gives a Hand
1. “Two winters ago, I was walking home from school when I saw an old man who was sleeping in the street near the bus station,” says Mariem Khemiri, a sixteen-year-old girl from Sfax. “It was raining and he didn’t have a coat. I couldn’t stop thinking about him.” The next day, she joined a local charity which helps homeless and needy people.
2. Every Saturday, Mariem and about twenty other volunteers collect clothes, blankets and food from shops and families. They sort the donations and take them to people who live alone or cannot afford basic things. During Ramadan, the group also prepares hot meals for students and workers who are far from their families. Last winter, they gave more than three hundred blankets to families in the poorest neighbourhoods of the city. “We don’t have much money, but we have time and energy,” Mariem explains.
3. Volunteering has changed Mariem’s life. She has become more patient and more confident, and she has learnt to work in a team. In 2025, she created a homework club for children from poor families, where older pupils help younger ones in maths and French. “Helping others is the best way to help yourself,” she says. “I hope that more teenagers will join us.”

Moreover, it helps us to make new friends and to become more responsible. I hope that many of you will join us soon!
